A friend recently asked me, “How can you call yourself Keep Austin Human and then write about AI?”

It’s a fair question, and she’s not the only one who’s asked. I hear it at coffee meetups, in messages, and from family. The name sounds like a protest sign, so people often think I’m against technology.

I’m not.

This article explains what Keep Austin Human is, what it aims to do, and why a publication with “human” in the name talks so much about artificial intelligence. You’ll also see a new phrase coined here: The Great Agency Rebalance.

agency · /ˈā-jən(t)-sē/ · noun · "the capacity, condition, or state of acting or of exerting power" — Merriam-Webster

What We Actually Do

Keep Austin Human has two main goals that work together.

The first goal is to help people understand and navigate what’s happening with AI, especially agentic AI.

Agentic AI is software that doesn’t just answer questions but takes action for you. It can schedule meetings, write first drafts, manage workflows, and make decisions within the limits you set. This isn’t something for the future; it’s already here and changing how work happens in every industry.

The second goal is to share stories of real people doing meaningful work in our community.

Founders, creators, business owners, and leaders bring Austin to life. These aren’t just feel-good stories. They’re real conversations about purpose, determination, and what motivates someone to build something important.

These two goals support the same mission, just from different perspectives.

The Great Agency Rebalance

We need a name for what’s happening right now. It shouldn’t be scary or overly hyped. It should be honest.

I’m calling it the Great Agency Rebalance.

Here’s what I mean. The word “agency” has two important meanings right now. There are AI agents, which are software that act on your behalf. Then there’s human agency—your ability to make choices, direct your work, and shape your life. Both types of agency are changing simultaneously. The real question isn’t about the resistance to AI. It’s about finding the right balance between the two.

That’s what the rebalance means. Work that used to be done only by people is now being automated. Some tasks go to machines, while others stay with us.

In short, we’re all learning how to share work with AI, and those who do it well will succeed.

What the Tags Mean

When you browse Keep Austin Human, you’ll notice two main tags on articles.

Articles tagged "Agency" talk about how agentic AI is changing the workforce, how people can adapt, how businesses should handle the transition, and what it means for families and communities. These aren’t technical deep dives for engineers; they’re for anyone who wants to stay informed.

Articles tagged Feature Stories focus on people. These are in-depth profiles of individuals in our community doing remarkable things. For example, a founder who started a business after a personal crisis, a creator who turned a side project into something that changed her neighborhood, or a leader who took a risk no one else would. These stories remind us what’s worth protecting as everything else changes.

We use both tags because both ideas are true:

The way we work is changing quickly, but the people doing the work still matter more than any tool.

Why “Human” Doesn’t Mean “Anti-Tech”

This is where people often think of conflict. They see the word “human” and interpret it as a defensive stance. They assume that Keep Austin Human is opposed to AI, automation, or progress.

It’s the opposite.

Keeping Austin human doesn’t mean saying no to technology. It means making sure technology serves the people who live here. It means no one gets left behind just because they didn’t hear about the changes in time. It means a barista, a software engineer, and a small business owner all have access to the same information about what’s coming and how to get ready for it.

Humans and AI aren’t opponents. They’re partners in something new, something that hasn’t fully taken shape yet. This publication exists to help that partnership succeed, especially for people who didn’t choose a tech revolution but are experiencing it anyway.

That’s what the slogan means:

Balancing agency - humanity and AI. It’s not about picking a side, but about finding the right balance.

This Is For You

If you’re a professional wondering if your job is safe, a business owner trying to figure out where AI fits, or just curious about what’s happening and want a clear answer without jargon or panic, this publication is for you.

Keep Austin Human isn’t anti-technology. It’s pro-human where that matters most. We’ll talk honestly about the agency rebalance—the opportunities, the risks, and the challenges. And we’ll keep sharing stories of people who make this city special.

Technology will keep improving. The real question is whether we will too.

Uncertainty lies ahead. I look forward to taking this journey together.
