NAMI Central Texas: Four Decades of Showing Up for Mental Health

In 1984, a handful of local families needed community and answers. They were struggling to support loved ones experiencing mental health challenges without a network to support them. So they built it themselves. What began as NAMI Austin has since grown into NAMI Central Texas, an organization that now serves every community across Travis and Williamson Counties.

Even though the name has changed over the years, the reason for the work remains the same. NAMI Central Texas exists to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by mental health conditions through education, support, and advocacy. At the heart of the organization is a simple belief that mental health conditions are not a personal failing or a family's fault. They are real, diagnosable, and treatable, and no one should have to face them alone.

The beliefs that drive NAMI Central Texas are evident in the resources it offers to the communities it serves. Among those resources is a guide for how to respond when a loved one with a mental illness has been arrested. It walks families through the vital steps needed to navigate these complicated situations, such as determining where the person is being held, ensuring their medication reaches them, recognizing and reporting mistreatment, working effectively with a public defender, and preparing for a court appearance. This matters because people living with mental health conditions are far more likely to face the criminal justice system, which may not be equipped to accommodate people living with mental health challenges.

Centering Equity in the Fight Against Stigma

NAMI Central Texas recognizes that public stigma around mental illness has long fallen hardest on marginalized communities, particularly those already navigating systemic racism, discrimination, and oppression. Because these factors often prevent people from seeking help, the organization centers diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in its work. That means recruiting board members, staff, and volunteers who reflect the full diversity of Central Texas, building programs that are culturally and linguistically responsive, and advocating for policies that turn good intentions into real change. NAMI Central Texas knows the journey is never finished, and they will continue to adapt as the community grows and develops.

A Promise That Endures in Central Texas

NAMI Central Texas has served families facing mental health challenges for over four decades and now serves every community of Travis and Williamson counties. By meeting families at their most difficult moments and lifting up the voices too often left unheard, the organization turns compassion into lasting change. The work is never finished, but the promise endures. In Central Texas, no one has to walk this path alone.
